The Best Battery Tender for Your Bike or Car

I’ve learned the hard way that the best battery tender can mean the difference between a motorcycle that’s ready to ride and one that’s dead in the garage, ruining your day off. Over the years, I’ve gone through a stack of cheap chargers that either overcooked my batteries, barely put out enough current to keep them alive, or quit altogether after a few months.

Those failures meant unexpected jump-starts, premature battery replacements, and plenty of missed rides. After enough frustration, I set out to find the best battery tender that actually works—and keeps working.

Below are the three best options for keeping your expensive car and bike batteries charged, including my personal favorite. I’ve also included one to avoid at all costs!

Battery Tender Junior

Battery Tender is as much of a household name as something like this can be, and is also a top contender for the title of best battery tender. he Battery Tender Junior is a compact, 0.75-amp charger designed for maintaining smaller batteries in motorcycles, ATVs, lawn equipment, and other seasonal vehicles. It delivers a fully automatic four-step charging program—initialization, bulk charge, absorption, and float—that keeps batteries at their optimal voltage without the risk of overcharging.

Compatible with lead-acid, AGM, and gel cell batteries, the Battery Tender Junior features reverse polarity protection and a quick-connect harness for easy hookup in tight spaces. Lightweight and simple to use, it’s an affordable, set-it-and-forget-it option for keeping small to medium-sized batteries charged and ready to go year-round.

I particularly like the dongle-type connector, making it easy to keep the Harley-Davidson Sportster easily charged without having to take the seat off.

NOCO Genius5

The NOCO Genius 5 earns its place among the best battery tenders with a compact yet powerful design. This 5-amp smart charger serves as a maintainer, trickle charger, and desulfator, handling both lead-acid (AGM, gel, flooded, maintenance-free) and lithium-ion (LiFePO₄) batteries, and it adapts to both 6-volt and 12-volt systems.

A built-in thermal sensor ensures precise temperature-compensated charging, preventing overcharge in heat and undercharge in cold for year-round reliability. It impresses with its ability to revive deeply discharged batteries—charging from as low as 1 volt, or even from zero volts using “Force Mode.” Ultra-safe features like spark-proof technology, reverse polarity protection, and auto memory mean you can leave it connected indefinitely without overcharging worries.

Also, it scored highly on a recent Project Farm video too, so you know we’re not joking about how good this one is.

Our Favorite: Corebox Battery Charger, 6 Amp

After experiencing horrible problems with my Hechobo tenders (detailed below), I picked up a Corebox 6 Amp Battery Charger and Maintainer. It includes a tender mode for regular flooded-cell batteries, an AGM-specific mode for your motorcycles, and a repair mode to desulfate unhealthy batteries. It’s inexpensive, works great, and has a digital readout of charging voltage, amperage, and temperature. From my personal experience, this is the best battery tender on the market — or at least that I’ve used. I liked it so much I bought another one for my other vehicle!

Bonus – The Worst Battery Tender of All Time!

I can speak from experience – this is the worst battery tender that has ever existed. I’ve had two, and not only does it not charge dead batteries, it doesn’t provide enough float voltage to keep your battery healthy during prolonged storage. In the Project Farm shootout, this also finished in dead-last place, which is the least surprising thing I’ve ever seen.

Pro: they’re cheap.

The Best Battery Tenders on the Market

When it comes to finding the best battery tender for a variety of vehicles, the Corebox 6 Amp Battery Charger and Maintainer stands out as our favorite overall pick. Its balance of charging power, versatility, and safety features make it a reliable choice for everything from motorcycles to larger automotive batteries. For smaller batteries, the Battery Tender Junior remains a tried-and-true option that’s easy to use and dependable for long-term maintenance.

Whether you need to keep your project Mustang, a big touring bike or a compact scooter ready to ride, choosing the best battery tender for your needs will save you time, frustration, and the cost of premature battery replacements.
