I enjoy having a clean house, but like most people I do not have a great deal of time to spend cleaning it. The last thing I want to do with my free time is devote an entire afternoon to vacuuming, mopping, rinsing buckets, and waiting for the floors to dry.
My house also has a lot of tile flooring, which looks nice but also shows every footprint, crumb, dust bunny, and spot of dried water almost immediately.
Looking for something that would save time while also cleaning better, I decided to try a Tineco vacuum mop. After around a year of continuous use, I could not be happier with the purchase. After using it throughout my home, I have reached a simple conclusion: everyone with substantial hardwood, vinyl, laminate, or tile flooring should have one.
Of course, as soon as I get around to reviewing this one, they’ve updated their product line with the Tineco ONE i5 Stretch vacuum mop, as well as the i6 model, but I believe this review should still apply to the new models.

Vacuuming and Mopping in One Step
The biggest advantage of the Tineco vacuum mop is that it combines two separate chores into one. Instead of vacuuming the entire house and then going back over the same floors with a mop or Swiffer, the machine picks up loose debris while washing the floor at the same time.
That alone can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to clean a house. For ordinary dust, crumbs, footprints, and everyday grime, I can make a single pass through a room rather than cleaning the same area twice — and leave it looking sparkling.
The machine applies clean water and cleaning solution to the roller, scrubs the floor, and then pulls most of the dirty water back into a separate tank. You are not simply spreading the same bucket of increasingly dirty water from room to room, as you might with a traditional mop (this is one of those things that has never really made sense to me).
Because the Tineco sucks up most of the water it puts down, the floor is only slightly damp after cleaning. In most cases, the floor is ready to walk on almost immediately. This is especially useful in kitchens, hallways, and other high-traffic areas where it is difficult to keep people and pets off the floor for an extended period.
Cleaner Floors Without Mop-Water Residue
One of the things that bothered me most about old-fashioned mopping was the residue it could leave behind. Even when a floor looked clean from a distance, it might have visible streaks, cloudy patches, or a slightly sticky feeling after it dried. This is especially true if you have hard water, like we do.
The Tineco vacuum mop has largely eliminated that problem. Since it uses a controlled amount of cleaning solution and removes the dirty water rather than leaving it on the floor, the tile looks cleaner and feels cleaner afterward.
The condition of the dirty-water tank provides some convincing evidence that the machine is doing its job. Even when the floor does not look especially dirty, the collected water can be shockingly dark. It is both satisfying and slightly disturbing to see how much dirt was hiding on a floor that appeared relatively clean (especially smooth porcelain floors that don’t have a “texture” for grime to collect in).
Cleaning Solution That Lasts
Tineco recommends using its proprietary cleaning solution in the machine. Although some owners may be tempted to experiment with other floor cleaners, I would recommend following the manufacturer’s guidance.
The good news is that the cleaning solution lasts a surprisingly long time. My machine only requires about half a capful per clean-water tank, so a bottle goes much further than you might expect. You are not pouring large quantities of expensive cleaner into the machine every time you use it. It also smells excellent.
Using the recommended amount also helps prevent excessive foam, buildup, or residue inside the machine. With such a small amount needed per tank, there is little reason to risk using a product that was not designed for it. I recommend adding the solution and then the water to ensure a good mixture.
Battery Life for a Full House
While I’ve been transitioning every tool I have to cordless, battery life was one of my concerns before purchasing a cordless floor-cleaning machine.
In my experience, the battery is sufficient to clean both floors of my 2,100-square-foot house without taking a charging break. The exact runtime will naturally depend on the model, floor plan, cleaning mode, and amount of dirt, but I have not found battery life to be a meaningful limitation.
I do occasionally need to let the machine run its self-cleaning cycle once or twice while cleaning the entire house (signaled by a flashing light on the machine). The process only takes a few minutes and is much easier than manually washing out a traditional mop throughout the job.
What Pet Owners Should Know
The Tineco vacuum mop is a great tool for homes with pets, but pet hair requires a little extra attention for best results and minimal frustration.
Although the machine can pick up hair along with dirt and liquid, large quantities of pet hair can clog the roller, filter, dirty-water tank, or internal passages fairly quickly. For that reason, I recommend doing a quick pre-vacuum in areas where hair tends to accumulate.
I use a cordless Dyson to spot-vacuum visible clumps of pet hair before using the Tineco. This does not mean I thoroughly vacuum the entire house first, which would defeat some of the time-saving benefit. I simply pick up the worst of the loose hair, especially around furniture, along baseboards, corners, and in the places where pets sleep.
A minute or two of spot-vacuuming can help the Tineco operate more effectively and make cleanup afterward much easier.
Cleaning the Dirty-Water Tank
The Tineco vacuum mop saves a tremendous amount of time during the actual floor-cleaning process, but I have found that it does need to be cleaned properly after each use to prevent odor buildup.
The dirty-water tank should be emptied and rinsed thoroughly every time you finish cleaning. Do not simply pour out the water and place the tank back in the machine. Hair, crumbs, and other physical debris can remain trapped in the tank, lid, filter, or internal components.
Any debris left sitting in damp conditions can begin to smell surprisingly quickly. Once that odor develops, it can make the tank, roller, and eventually the entire machine smell bad. In severe cases, you may even notice the odor while using the vacuum mop.
After each cleaning session, I rinse the dirty-water tank thoroughly and remove any hairs or debris I can see. It only takes a few extra minutes, and it prevents a much more unpleasant cleaning job later. Then, I’ll just leave both tanks out overnight with the caps/lids open to allow them to dry out before putting them back in the machine for storage.
Do Not Forget the Roller
Pet hair can also wrap around the cleaning roller or collect in the space behind it. The self-cleaning function helps wash dirt out of the roller, but it will not necessarily remove every strand of tangled hair.
If you have pets, it is worth removing the roller regularly and checking the entire compartment. Pull out any accumulated hair; I haven’t found the need to rinse the roller itself. Just make sure all hair and debris are removed.
Hair trapped around a damp roller can develop the same unpleasant odor as debris left in the dirty-water tank. Keeping both areas clean will help the machine continue to smell fresh and perform properly.
Is the Tineco Vacuum Mop Worth It?
A Tineco vacuum mop costs more than a basic bucket and mop, but it is also a much more capable appliance. It reduces the number of steps involved in cleaning, removes dirty water from the floor, dries quickly, and produces better results than the traditional mops I used previously.
For me, the time savings alone make it worthwhile. I can clean a large area of tile flooring in one pass rather than vacuuming, mopping, rinsing, and waiting for everything to dry. The floors are cleaner, there is less residue, and the entire process feels much less burdensome.
It does require some basic maintenance, particularly if you have pets. You need to empty and rinse the dirty-water tank, remove trapped debris, inspect the roller, and use the self-cleaning function. However, these tasks are relatively minor compared with the time and effort the machine saves.
There are also a few competitors to this product that appear to be high quality (most notably from Shark and iRobot), but I haven’t tried out those particular products yet.
The TLDR? Yes, the amount of time that this saves me, in conjunction with the relatively affordable price of the i5 means that this is definitely worth it to me. If it was broken or stolen, I’d buy it again.

The Tineco vacuum mop is an excellent solution (no pun intended) for anyone who wants a cleaner house in less time. It is particularly useful in homes with mostly tile, hardwood, laminate, or other sealed hard flooring.
